This is a lesson in how to study the medical literature.

When studies were done on the radical prostatectomy and the transurethral resection of the prostate, it was found that the rates at which they are done vary greatly from region to region. This is the classic finding for operations that don't really work.

It is also very striking about how different the rates of medical procedures are around the world.
